Paranormal Romance: $20 a Month to Nearly $2000!

JJ King’s new release case study
I’ve dipped my toe into the indie publishing world in 2016 with my first book, Blood of Eden, a paranormal romance starring wolf shifters. I didn’t write it to market, I tried to be unique, to stand out, which is why I made very little money from it… for a while.
From 2016 to 2018, I finished that trilogy and wrote several other books for a small press. Getting that first contract was such a big deal to me, it felt like I’d arrived! I couldn’t get my books out there, but surely a publisher could. I soon realized that small presses didn’t have the marketing savvy needed to make my book sell, either.
I scoured Facebook for groups of authors that I could see were killing it and found one group of paranormal romance and urban fantasy authors who seemed to be successful or, at the very least, were heading in that direction. I watched and listened and learned.
That group was called Author Grow and was run by Rebecca Hamilton.
Rebecca hosted a few discussions and a free course that I jumped at and read through in one day. Her “Roadmap to writing success” was just what it is called, my map to a better career. I poured through the case studies and started applying her free advice.
At that time, I was making around $20 a month from sales of my trilogy. Rebecca’s free advice grew that amount quickly and soon I was making $100 a month through hard work and community engagement. But, I wanted more.
I had very little to invest so I saved up for months and waited for the day her Mastermind course went on sale, then I grabbed it and rejoiced! I read through that baby step by step and realized all the reasons I’d been stagnant in my career. That course changed how I write and what I write. I still write my beloved wolves, but now I do it smarter.
Then I bought the Advertising for Authors course and that $100 a month I’d been making exploded! I created Facebook ads for Blood of Eden using Rebecca’s explanations, which were step by step and easy to follow. The money started coming in.
The first month using Facebook ads I made $427 and invested that right back into my ads. That was December 2018. This month, January 2020, I released the first book in my new series, Alpha Wolf Academy at $2.99, and made $1770! For those who want the breakdown of spend to earnings, I spent $750 this month because of the release to make that $1770. That’s $1020 in profit and the earnings are still rolling in from my release. That’s a higher number than I would usually spend on ads but it was specifically to release strong.
So, what got me here?
